Every year each person produces packaging waste weighing more than four times their luggage allowance on a jumbo jet.*
Although the raw material for making paper is predominantly trees, nearly all paper is made from wood grown in these “sustainable” forests. However, as the demand for paper has increased, more timber has been needed to meet the demand for wood pulp which has meant the loss of valuable wildlife habitats and ecosystems which has a direct impact on the biodiversity of the whole forest. Producing recycled paper involves between 28 – 70% less energy consumption than virgin paper and uses less water and produces fewer polluting emissions to air and water.
Recycling one tonne of paper saves at least 30,000 litres of water and between 3,000 and 4,000 kWh of electricity which is enough for an average 3 bedroom house for a whole year.
By making more informed and sensible choices for your facility you can also help reduce paper wastage. If recycled materials were not used to manufacture bathroom tissue, 3.5 tons of virgin wood would be needed in order to manufacture one ton of bathroom tissue.
A solution to saving paper…
**By choosing a hand dryer over paper towels you can not only save paper but you could save up to 95% of costs. Using only ⅙ of the energy used by conventional hand dryers, the Blast™ Ultra Fast Hand Dryer simultaneously blows water off hands and evaporates residual moisture. Despite its power, Blast™ consumes only 1450 watts. The combination of low power consumption and 10-second drying time results in an 80 percent reduction in energy use compared to conventional dryers.
