There are four main types of scent marketing depending on what’s being sold. For example, the Aroma Billboard Smell is one that creates the boldest scented statement – associating a brand to a scent and vice versa. Think of when you step into a Hilton; they all smell the same regardless of what location the hotel is in, don’t they?
Second up is Thematic Smell – the smell is relevant to the type of business, such as a cooling mint or herbal scent experienced in a spa. This technique is not as deliberate as the Aroma Billboard Smell, but as important. You wouldn’t want to go to a spa and smell food aromas would you?
The third type is Ambient Smells – this is more subtle and is used to cover and eliminate unpleasant odours or indeed, fill a void. Places such as toilets, and large open spaces often employ ambient smells for their scent marketing needs but are increasingly looking at more ‘retail’ or ‘end user’ friendly fragrances to enhance the environment rather than traditional citrus scents that offer the notion that an area smells clean.
Finally, the fourth type of scent marketing is Signature Smells – signature smells are can be found in higher end department stores or big fashion houses. Big luxurious smells such as cardamom, bergamot and nutmeg for example are the most sought after signature smells. These scents are linked to the brand and indeed to occasion making for a truly unique experience. At Vectair Systems, we make an array of bespoke fragrances for high end brands that help tell their own story.
