We have introduced our proprietary Airadicate™ ingredient into some of our aircare products to counteract and neutralize bad smells, while also enhancing environments with our unique fragrance formulations.

What is malodor? – the vast majority of malodours are comprised of water-soluble molecules that are very volatile, are detected at extremely low concentrations, and have aromas that humans find offensively unpleasant. Since these odors are both distinctive and unpleasant, trace amounts can be readily detected by our sense of smell. We are working to create formulations targeted for a large number of applications where malodor control is vital to the success of the product. Some specific examples of malodor molecules are the following:

  • Mouth malodor: Hydrogen sulfide | Underarm malodor: 3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid | Foot malodor: Isovaleric acid | Fecal malodor: indole | Urine malodor: Trimethylamine | Tobacco malodor | Garlic malodor: Allyl methyl sulfide (considered the key contributor to garlic odor) | Fish malodor: Dimethylamine (associated with fish that is not fresh).

Confirmation of effect using headspace analysis & sensory testing

The capability of Airadicate™ to remove bad smells (or malodors) was measured objectively by use of ‘SPME headspace analysis’, and subjectively using a sensory testing panel composed of perfumers and expert evaluators who evaluated the effect of Airadicate™ on the perceived intensity of the malodor.

SPME headspace analysis:

SPME (Solid Phase Micro-Extraction) is the absorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) onto a solid absorbent polymer phase followed by the direct desorption of the VOCs into a gas chromatograph (GC).

Verification of Airadicate™ malodor counteraction using headspace analysis with malodor models

As part of the headspace validation study, five malodor molecules were chosen as ‘models’ for the molecules in the eight malodor classes described above.  These were dimethyl sulfide, indole, isovaleric acid, methyl mercaptan, and diethylamine. Airadicate™ was assessed for the ability to reduce the headspace concentration of these molecules.

Findings were that the Airadicate™ formulations formed ‘molecular complexes’ with the model set of malodors used and significantly reduced their concentration in the headspace. In other words, bad odor or malodor was reduced.
