A Biological Approach to Hygiene

Blog time again… my chance to get on my soapbox about natural biological cleaning solutions! So, scientific hat on, I do hope it suits me, but more importantly, I’d like to share some information with everyone for which I have a huge passion! We are talking about biological based products. Using a biological formulation can solve specific problems, many of which, cannot be addressed by everyday chemicals.

I’m sure most of you know that a substance of biological origin can be used as a vaccine, pesticide, and cleaning products. But, what exactly is “biological” and how is it adapted to our hygiene needs?

Hopefully, this view will make us actually take our hat off to the biological product…

The ‘logic’ behind going biological

Combining innocuous strains of naturally occurring bacteria with powerful enzymes can be effective, resourceful and safe to use for cleaning and hygiene purposes. An ‘organic’ cleaning solution uses a biological formula to clean and deodorize without harming the environment, employees and visitors.

These products unite nature’s own process to recycle waste into simple, yet important substances. Applied to a surface, the microbial in the biological treatment consumes the stain – turning it into O2 and CO2.

Meeting modern day needs

There is one thing in particular that is becoming progressive amongst the general public; concerns over health and safety matters. Manufacturers especially have come under pressure to take visible action in order to protect the health and safety of all their interested parties and the surrounding environment.

The use of biological cleaning practices has to be a step in the right direction!

So what is the science behind the logic?

Conventional cleaning products contain surfactants which lower the surface tension of water to enable cleaning to take effect. Soaps and detergents are typical surfactants that can visibly remove soiling, but may not eliminate odours or deep clean the soiled item.

Now, imagine a necklace of plastic poppers. These represent molecules that form the waste matter.

Once the biological solution is applied, the special bacterial strains go to work by secreting enzymes that break the bonding between the beads (molecules), separating them into particles of waste that are more accessible for the bacteria to “eat”. Each bacterium having absorbed this food becomes large enough to become two identical bacteria, and this process of eating and replication continues for as long as there is soiling (or food) available. When the soiling (food) is depleted the bacteria die, leaving a clean odour-free area.

Biological benefits

Vectair Systems as a hygiene provider, have been proactive in researching, sourcing, developing and testing biologically based products. There are many different strains of bacteria & Vectair has selected those most suited to resolving specific cleaning problems for its range of biological & enzyme solutions.

Quadrasan® Breakdown, specially formulated to deal with organic soiling typically associated with urine (which causes long-term odour problems) uses safe bacteria to degrade organic waste that is the source of the malodour in washrooms, care homes and in the home where children and pets can be the cause.

As well as containing minimal surfactants and a pleasant perfume, Quadrasan® Breakdown contains specially selected micro-organisms. The products special combination of bacteria & enzymes are also highly effective in the removal of spilled foods & beverages, blood, vomit & faeces… in fact most organic matter.

These are examples that are notoriously hard to eliminate with conventional cleaning methods, especially when absorbed into carpeting and porous flooring.

I have actually seen Quadrasan® Breakdown literally eat its way across a food-stained carpet removing all traces of organic matter & I also know of hospitality providers that successfully remove stains & blood from mattresses.

You could say, we’re ahead of the curve or trend, but, we’re modest folk here at Vectair Towers!

More general benefits of the biological product can be;

  • Environmentally friendly and safer than traditional chemical based products.
  • Highly focused – specialized enzymes produce microbials to clean and deodorise that chemical cleaners alone cannot treat.
  • Help to reduce labour costs by providing residual cleaning, working long after product application.
  • Better health is provided for by replacing potentially disease-causing bacteria with known, safe microbes.

Not to be confused

It’s important not to get confused between biologically based products and solely enzyme-based goods. The former provides different cleaning results to that of the latter. Purely enzyme-based products disrupt the organic matter into smaller pieces & displace it – but DO NOT completely eliminate it. In contrast, biological based products continue to chip away (eat) organic matter until there is nothing left.

As a result, products sourced biologically, play a key role in neutralizing malodours, while enzyme-based products simply dislodge the organic material without removing the odours.

A (bio) logical conclusion

Although biological and chemical properties differ from one another, they can actually complement each other, safely and shouldn’t be overlooked. An ideal, sustainable hygiene technology should build on the strengths of each technology in order to produce an effective and more complete, hygienic clean.

And finally, they call me DJ Enzyme because I always break it down… or just Rich Martin would do nicely! Until next time…
